Description:
Leaves homotropic. Inflorescence simple or a sparsely branched synflorescence, terminal, sometimes also lateral; florescence markedly monosymmetrical, spathes white or pale green, persistent. Florescence component of a single cymule; cymule subbrachyblastic, interphyll and bracteoles absent. Corolla tube less than 1/2 the length of the lobes; outer staminodes 2, ± equal, petaloid; callose staminode distally petaloid; staminal appendage large and showy. (From Kubitzki, et al., p. 291)
Geographical Distribution:
Plants of the genus are widespread in South America, especially in dry forests.
Taxonomic Diversity:
Comprises about 20 species.
